Switcher welcomes the launch of eir – Ireland’s fastest broadband provider but calls on network operators to close Ireland’s digital divide
Eoin Clarke, Managing Director of Switcher.ie says: “Switcher.ie welcomes the launch of eir. A fresh approach from Ireland’s largest telecommunications operator can only mean good things for Irish consumers. The launch of Ireland’s fastest broadband speed – 1000Mb and a new range of discounted price plans – will force the other players to re-evaluate their own propositions and hopefully we will see lots of savings that will help customers to lower their home entertainment and communications outgoings.
“eir should be commended for its €1bn investment in transforming its network capabilities. 23,000 households and businesses in 15 communities now have access to eir’s 1000Mb fibre to the home product. The speed will be transformative for many people. However, many of these locations are large towns that already have sufficient broadband speeds to carry out popular online activities. Speed test results recorded by Switcher.ie in the 15 locations over the last year show an average download speed of 23Mb and an average upload speed of 7Mb.
“Although eir promises to reach 70% of homes with high speed broadband by the end of 2016, households in rural locations may feel overlooked again. A digital divide still remains for communities outside of the major Irish towns. With over one third of Irish people spending over 20 hours per week online the significant challenge remains for network operators to address the two-tiered broadband infrastructure that exists in Ireland.
“eir is Ireland’s only quad play provider (broadband, digital television, home phone and mobile). Having all your communications and entertainment costs on one bill can allow for greater savings and transparency. We expect one other provider to enter the quad play market in the coming months, more providers offering quad play will mean more competition when it comes to bundling and allow for even more savings for consumers. eir is also the first provider to introduce 24/7 broadband and TV technical support for customers.
“Recent research from Switcher shows that the top three reasons people switch broadband providers are; price (33%), speed (21%) and data (15%). Today’s announcement shows that eir has focused on the three main reasons why we switch broadband in Ireland by launching competitive discounted unlimited broadband plans with speeds of up to 1000Mb.
“eir has launched with special introductory offers that will see all new customers who sign up online receive the first four months at a discounted rate in addition to free set up, a free Wi-Fi modem and a free digital TV set top box. eir’s Base Mobile bundle provides savings of €64 over 12 months when compared to UPC’s 240Mb Mobile World plan and €94 when compare Sky’s Fibre Unlimited Talk Anytime plan.
“We would advise customers to take their time before switching. No two broadband and digital TV bundles are the same. Before switching take the time to look at the offers out there and choose the package that suits you best.”
