THE DEADLY DUO – SPAM AND VIRUSES
Spam volume spiked upward a full 19 percent from October to November, accounting for 88 percent of all e-mail sent in November, according to e-mail security vendor Postini. Of the 6.9 billion messages processed by Postini in November, nearly 6.1 billion qualified as instances of malicious spam, phishing, viruses, and so-called “directory harvest” attacks, which are attempts to hijack entire corporate e-mail directories via enterprise servers for spamming purposes. That spike in spam activity went above the expected seasonal increase during the holiday shopping season, said Steve Kahan, vice president of Postini. GOOGLE’S CHINA FILTERING DRAWS FIRE
The group Reporters Without Borders is blasting search engine leader Google for its supposed complicity in government censorship, requesting that the popular Web tool provider pull its news service that excludes content not approved by the Chinese government. The group, which has been critical of content and technology providers including Yahoo, Google and Cisco, argues that the censored Internet resources and tools to produce them are unethical and socially irresponsible. However, observers such as Frost & Sullivan senior analyst Mukul Krishna argue that such companies — eager to tap foreign, fertile markets — have little choice but to work within government guidelines. Krishna also told TechNewsWorld that it was better to give Internet users in China some exposure, even if it is censored, to the Internet. “Just as a business decision, you have to do it,” Krishna said. “Over a period of time, even from a social perspective, you are giving these people exposure. The fact that those people are getting exposure to other things happening in the world is a good thing.” Source: www.technewsworld.com/story/38573.html?u=emmasmith&p=ENNSS_1c75404dcfb5e6e3449e8b9dfde4c488

FORFÁS URGES RESPONSE ON IRELAND’S BROADBAND DEFICIT
Ireland currently has a broadband deficit of 360,000 connections and must meet and double this target by 2007 in order to remain competitive, a new report has urged. Since last year, Ireland has fallen further behind the average and leading countries to which it is most often compared, the report found. The latest Forfás Broadband Telecommunications Benchmarking report, released on 29 November, assesses Ireland’s competitiveness in relation to 21 countries and presents an update of progress over the past 12 months, as well as setting out recommended actions for 2005. In order to catch up by 2007, Ireland needs to overturn the deficit of 360,000 broadband connections. Given the additional growth other countries are expected to experience during that period, the report also recommended that another 370,000 lines are also required, bringing the total to more than 700,000 connections.
