The IT was developed at the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded CSET (Centre for Science, Technology and Engineering) DERI in the National University of Ireland (NUI) in Galway.
The web standard, Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities (SIOC), is a way of incorporating data into websites and blogs for example that makes it easier to connect online communities and internet-based discussions.
Commenting on the visit today (23 May 2011) of President Obama, the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Irish Government, Professor Patrick Cunningham spoke of ‘the great relationship between the US and Ireland in science.’
‘Ireland has a great reputation of a place to do good science and examples such as the IT developed in Galway and adopted by President Obama’s Administration is an endorsement of the calibre of Irish science.’
In 2012, Europe’s largest science event, ESOF 2012 (Euroscience Open Forum) is coming to Dublin.
Professor Cunningham, who is also Chair of ESOF 2012 went on to speak of ‘the great history of US and Irish science collaboration and to honour this, one of the major themes in ESOF 2012, Europe’s largest science event which is coming to Dublin next year, will be The Atlantic – a shared resource.
‘This aspect of the conference is a joint US-ESOF partnership programme in which eminent scientists from the US and Europe will come together in July next year in Dublin to discuss the critical aspects of this great shared resource.’
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mr. Richard Bruton T.D., today [Wednesday] announced a call for proposals for the Dublin City of Science programme of events in 2012.
‘Rebuilding Ireland’s international reputation for excellence in science and technology will be crucial to achieving growth and getting people back to work. I am developing a plan to put science, technology and innovation at the centre our growth and jobs policies. Part of this will involve showing to the world that we are a creative, innovative, scientific nation.
‘Dublin City of Science 2012, a highly prestigious event which was won in the face of stiff competition, offers a perfect opportunity to show the world what we can do. I think we should all get involved in this programme and help promote Ireland to the world as a centre of innovation and creativity in science and technology,’ the Minister said speaking at the launch.
The call, which will remain open until 30 June 2011, is seeking proposals for a year-long programme of events to engage the citizens of the island of Ireland in science. It is hoped to devise a programme of events that will demonstrate the reach of science into almost every aspect of our lives – education, business, the arts, sports and our communities.
Partnerships will also be sought with organisations and individuals who wish to develop events that will encourage the public to engage with science.
Dublin City of Science 2012 will showcase Irish expertise and creativity that will firmly place Ireland on the map for science excellence.
Speaking at the launch, Professor Patrick Cunningham, Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government said that: ‘the primary purpose of this call is to identify events that creatively engage with science and the public.
‘This could be by way of promoting an existing event, activity or idea. It could be something completely new, something you’d like to develop within your own organisation or institution, or in partnership with others. I would welcome activities in any format, indoor or outdoor, through the medium of theatre, film, exhibitions, workshops, debates, interactive dialogues, online events, the list is endless,’ Prof. Cunningham concluded.
Also at the launch today was the Dublin City of Science 2012 Project Director, Mr. David Fahy. He highlighted the importance to include events from a wide and varied reach.
‘While it is Dublin that is the City of Science, it is central to us that a programme is developed that stretches to include the whole island of Ireland.
‘I would urge those with an interest in science and technology and their impact on art, literature, music, sport, communities, the economy, society in general to submit proposals, Mr. Fahy concluded.

It’s Seachtain na Gaeilge this, em, fortnight and today is St. Patrick’s Day. As any
stalkers readers who have been reading this blog over the last three years will know I am a fluent Irish speaker. In fact I write a monthly technology column for the long-running Irish Langauge Online Zine Beo! My editor has kindly allowed me to republish a recent article I wrote about Quora to help the IIA commemorate Seachtain na Gaeilge.
In this article I give a basic overview of this new curated knowledge site that came out of private beta at the beginning of the year to much acclaim. I didn’t write too much about the business applications of Quora. However I have obviously been thinking about that since and briefly I think they are as follows:
- Share your expertise: when answering a question on Quora you can adjust your bio to suit that question. E.g. I work for the IIA so when I’m answering the question “How can professional associations survive Web 2.0?” I make it clear that I am a membership manager with a professional association. However if I wanted to respond to another question in the Television category I might set my bio to refer to my credentials as a TV critic.
- Gain knowledge: Many complain about the mundanity of much of the content on Facebook and Twitter. “Oh there are two many updates like “I’m on the bus.” In contrast to this Quora is heavily curated and while you can follow those in your network (or not!) you can also choose to follow specific topics (e.g. I am following Social Media Marketing) In fact you can follow only topics and no people at all.
- Build your network: However following topics and questions relating to your industry will allow you to develop your network, especially internationally. Quora’s system which allows users to “vote up” answers will also allow you to quickly recognise who is rated among their peers. This could potentially allow you to scout partners in different regions or, in our case, potential speakers.
- Search: While Quora actively discourages mentioning brand names their site is completely open to the search engines so sharing your knowledge and expertise on a topic that your customers search for and using keywords
cannilynaturally in your responses will only lead those customers back to you. E.g. Check out this thread on “wine opener gadgets“.

Ireland’s National Pension Reserve Fund [NPRF] invests $50 million in Venture Capital through Innovation Fund Ireland
The National Pensions Reserve Fund (NPRF) today announces a $50 million investment in Polaris Venture Partners. The investment is being made through Innovation Fund Ireland, a Government initiative to attract leading international venture capital fund managers to Ireland.
Polaris is a leading US venture capital firm. The firm will be increasing its focus on Ireland and Europe, providing a local and active source of venture capital from a leading international investment firm. Polaris will also be working with the IDA, Ireland’s inward investment agency, to identify opportunities within its network to bring fast-growing venture-backed companies to Ireland as a point of entry into Europe.
As part of the announcement, Polaris has confirmed that it has chosen to open the company’s first Dogpatch Labs facility outside of the United States in Dublin in support of Innovation Fund Ireland. Dogpatch Labs typically house 30 to 50 entrepreneurs working on new technology and life science related businesses at early stages of development. Polaris has had significant success with its existing Dogpatch Labs facilities in San Francisco, Cambridge (Massachusetts) and New York, where there is a fresh intake of entrepreneurs and start-ups every six months. The National Pensions Reserve Fund was established in 2001 to meet as much as possible of the costs of Ireland’s social welfare and public service pensions from 2025 until at least 2055. The NPRF is controlled by the NPRF Commission, which has a statutory commercial investment mandate, and is currently invested globally across a diversified range of asset classes including quoted equities, bonds, property, private equity and commodities. The NPRF also has investments in Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish Banks plc, made at the direction of the Minister for Finance in order to recapitalise these institutions. Recently it was announced that the NPRF will be required to contribute up to €10 billion to the EU-IMF programme of Financial Support for Ireland. In October we held a conference specifically aimed at online retailers called “8 Ways to Sell More Stuff” (read a review here). The feedback was very positive and we hope to produce more events in this style in 2011.

Nominations were accepted online from the public between February 23rd and March 27th 2009. Over 350 valid nominations were received, more than any previous year. Each of these nominations were assessed by a panel of judges who whittled them down to 15 shortlists of 5 each. The public are now invited to vote in each category until May 1st 2009.

Communications Minister Eamon Ryan today announced the National Broadband Scheme, the Government scheme to deliver broadband services throughout the country. Following the conclusion of a competitive tendering process, the Minister has entered into a contract for the delivery of this scheme with ‘3’ (a Hutchinson Whampoa company).
Ireland currently has over 1.2 million subscribers to broadband. The National Broadband Scheme will provide the remaining 10% of our population, or approximately 33% of the area of the country, with broadband services (see attached map). Ireland will have 100% coverage by September 2010; half of the area under the scheme will be covered by the end of this year.
Investment of €223 million from a combination of Exchequer funds, EU co-financing and ‘3’ will create 170 direct jobs. Hundreds more will be protected and created as the availability of broadband increases the investment and enterprise in the targeted areas.
‘3’ will extend its network to provide mobile wireless broadband services into the NBS area. Initially, the service will have a minimum download speed of 1.2 mbps. At least, two upgrades of speeds are planned during the lifetime of the contract. These product upgrades will be carried out at no cost to the customer.
Announcing the scheme, Minister Ryan said, “For too long, rural Ireland has been without this essential service.
Today’s announcement is a boost for the rural economy. Now businesses throughout the country can have ready access to the national and international markets. Employment will be created and sustained. Quality of life will improve for rural residents and communities will be strengthened.
This contract represents real value for public money. I congratulate ‘3’ on winning this contract and look forward to them meeting the challenging, but achievable coverage targets.”
Robert Finnegan Chief Executive of 3 commented: “3 is delighted to have won the NBS tender – it’s great news for 3 and for rural Ireland. We’ll be rolling out our first class broadband network bringing internet services to thousands of homes and businesses across the country. Over five years we’ll be investing 223 million euros and creating around 170 new jobs giving Ireland’s economy a welcome boost.
