  • HeadRec #3 - Sonru talks to Fiona O'Sullivan

HeadRec is our series of interviews with gurus, opinion leaders and innovators within the recruitment industry both in Ireland and abroad. This issue we talk to  Fiona O'Sullivan, Co Founder and Director of Meridian HR solutions and newly appointed Non Executive Director of Sonru. Fiona is a stalwart of the recruitment industry so pick her brain by reading the transcript below.

The recruitment industry in Ireland has undergone much change in recent months, what’s the single biggest challenge facing your company for 2010?

In a highly competitive market, the challenges facing Meridian HR Solutions are really down to market conditions, many companies are performing ahead of budget however there is still a lot of uncertainty in the marketplace and therefore companies are afraid to start spending again, especially in light of the fact that redundancies may have taken place a number of months ago.

How are You/your Company adapting to this face this challenge?

It is so important to be flexible and have a positive mindset.  We have developed new service lines to suit the market and always work on the basis that if we do an outstanding job for one client, word of mouth will be our best form of marketing.

Is there a person or company that you use to benchmark your future plans?

A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.” - Steve Jobs, Apple.

This man comes to mind, over the past year, I am fascinated at the success of Apple and their innovation in the marketplace.

If you had to come up with a one-line prediction for the recruitment industry in Ireland by December 2010, what would it be?

My one-line prediction for December 2010 is that Social Networking will continue to become an integral part of the recruitment process for prospecting talent - The importance of Employee Referral Programmes will be vital to ensure the success of this.

What’s the best tip you could offer recruiters, HR managers or jobseekers for 2010?

The best tip I would give to recruiters is to always keep your saw sharp - don't let your skills go stale, keep them fresh.  I would also remind them of the fact that as the recruitment process is very automated these days, it can depersonalise the Employer Brand therefore candidate relationship management is a priority in order to attract talent.

What’s the next industry event you plan to attend?

The next event I am due to attend is a talk by John Fitzgerald of Harmonics which is a CIPD event on 24th September.

    About Fiona O'Sullivan

  • Sonru Summer News

It has been a wonderful Summer - counting the inclement weather on one hand and the new additions to the team on the other. Business wise we signed a Reseller Agreement with IrishJobs.ie, won 2 more awards and had a visit/mentoring session with Sean Gallagher of Dragons' Den fame.

So on the people front, Shane Barron joined us as Technical Services Engineer in July while Fiona O'Sullivan (interviewed this month in HeadRec) joined us in August as Non Executive Director.  Business News: May was busy with the annoucememt of our Reseller deal with IrishJobs.ie along with closing some more investment and in June Sean Gallagher visited us for a mentoring session here in the office.

We also managed to clock up two more awards, in May Ed won the IIA Net Visionary Innovation Award then in June we scored on home ground winning New Business of the Year at the Wexford Business Awards. We've also received lots of media coverage both online, in the press and on radio. So it has been a good Summer and we're looking forward to an ever better Autumn.

  • Downturn forcing Recruitment Cost Upwards

A recent study conducted by Opinion Matters in the UK found that recruitment departments are experiencing increased expense owing to the unprecedented rise in job applications since the economic downturn.

The key findings, from this survey of over 500 in-house recruitment professionals, include:

    • A quarter have taken on more people to cope with the increased demand, with more than one in ten (12%) taking on two or more extra staff.

    • Almost half (49%) of those questioned admit to incurring further costs for people time, technology or external suppliers, in order to help manage the increased number of applicants.

    • A quarter of employers have added more stages to their recruitment process and 70% have introduced additional methods of selection.

    • A fifth (20%) say this has led to a longer time to hire leaving a gap in the business and almost a quarter (23%) say it is leading to candidates accepting offers elsewhere.

Here in Ireland, we're all too au fait with this inundation: Dublin Airport Authority being the case in point receiving over 9,000 applications for 500 positions recently advertised. We're also well aware that screening has become the hot topic among recruiters and hiring managers these days but at the same time candidates need the assurance that their application/CV is going to be given the same odds as the next man. That's why Sonru's Automated Video Interview Tool is proving so popular as not only does it reduce the time in screening candidates but it also provides a fair, standardised and structured recruitment process making it fair for all applicants.

A: There are a few reasons why drupal will not pick up on your new node template, the most common is just that the cache is out of date and needs to be cleared, but if your theme doesn't have a node.tpl.php file drupal won't use your overridden template either.

  • The Student Bank Account Awards

The first round of third level places were offered this week and for those starting in colleges around the country, the journey to independence and adult life has just begun. Starting college is an adventure and can be a little daunting as well as great fun. It’s not just about lectures and classes, there’s finding a place to live, making new friends and exploring new freedoms.

There’s also plenty of things to organize and set up before setting off to college and a good student bank account is one of them. I know that most students have better things to be doing right now than researching bank accounts, so I thought I’d do my bit for the college going crowd and do their homework for them. Hopefully I’ll be able to make choosing the right account that little bit easier!

The good news is that most working stiffs would love if their bank offered them the kind of incentives and deals that are on offer to students; so students should take advantage of them while they can. Just by opening a current account, students can get their hands on free cash, free trips to major European cities, free Travelcards and even interest free loans and overdrafts.

The banks aren’t dumb though, they take the long view and they know that if they get you while you’re in college, they’ve probably got you for life. That €100 they give you now, or the free trip or the interest free travel loan? They’ll make it back in spades once you graduate, so like I said, take advantage of them while you can.

So here’s a look at the student accounts from the big four. Allied Irish Bank, Bank of Ireland, Permanent TSB and Ulster Bank. It’s very hard to say for sure which is the best account because they all offer that one and most important thing: fee free banking. The rest are all about what’s important to you. So first of all, I’ll give my opinion on which bank has the best deal in each category, then list each account and what it offers and after that, you decide!

    Best Signup Offer or Freebie

Ulster Bank - €100 cash. Why? Well, nothing beats cold hard cash. And it’s paid out in two €50 installments in January and February, just at exactly that time when cash is tightest. Bank of Ireland comes a close second with a free return flight to a choice of 10 European cities.

    Best Overdraft

AIB €1,500 interest free overdraft. Why? Because it’s the biggest available and it’s interest free. Just don’t max it out right away.

    Best Loan Offer

Bank of Ireland - €2,000 travel loan. It's interest free for 9 months or you can make no payments for 9 months. Brilliant because it allows you to go on your J1 and not have to worry about payments or interest until Spring of the following year.

    Best Credit Card

AIB MC2 Student Mastercard. Very close race between this card and the Bank of Ireland Student Credit Card. Both have decent introductory purchase offers and ok interest rates, but AIB wins because of the higher credit limit of €1,500

    Best Current Account Interest

AIB at 1% for balances up to €1,000. Yes, even if you always maintain a balance of over €1,000, you’ll still only earn a tenner in interest, but it’s better than paying fees. Bank of Ireland again is a close second at 0.75% for balances of up to €1,500 which will actually earn you a little more in interest if you always maintain a balance of over €1,500, but I'm a realist and know there aren't too many student accounts with cash like that year round!

In alphabetical order, here's a look at the student accounts available from the big four and all that they offer.

Technical debt is a metaphor that refers to the consequences of allowing low quality software coding to go unchanged. Ward's first law states that lowering code quality lengthens development time. She's a little embarassed about the size of the photograph among other things but was happy enough to go on the record and show her appreciation to Sonru for their flexibility.

If you believe mobile apps are the right path for your business, then you need to consider all smartphone platforms (including the 85 percent that are not Apple), if not all handsets (including the 97 percent that are not Apple). And you must consider browser-based mobile apps (Web apps) - as well as download (native) apps.

  • What's Coming In The Hosting Upgrade?

If you are an existing Blacknight client you may be aware of the pending upgrade that will be carried out early next week (see our status site for more details).

In simple terms, there is a major hosting upgrade going in next Monday morning (hopefully before most people are in their offices).

A lot of the changes are "under the hood" and won't be obvious to our clients. So I've gone through the documentation and spoken to our CTO and come up with a few key points:

    • MS SQL 2008

    • Qmail

    • Microsoft Exchange Server 2010

    • SharePoint

    • Bug fixes

MS SQL 2008 will be "possible" after the upgrade. I'm not sure how quickly we'll be offering it, but the system will support it, so we will roll it out as quickly as we can.

Qmail, which handles email on our shared hosting, isn't changing dramatically, but some of the options and how they are displayed are being tweaked and improved. I'm also informed that several bugs have been resolved.

Support for Microsoft Exchange 2010 will mean that we'll be able to upgrade our existing clients so that the new features will be made available.

While the current setup supports SharePoint, the upgrade means that we will be able to offer a more cohesive experience with SharePoint hosting.

There are also a LOT of bug fixes and tweaks - some of them on the user side, others on the admin side ..

Not hosting with us already? Check out our hosting and domain offers - you know you want to!

  • Sending SMS from Apps and Webapps

It's easy to send SMS messages from any Web site or application, but it's surprising how few sites/applications actually do this. • Department of weights and measures for broadband

In Ireland there’s a government department called the Legal Metrology Service or LMS. If you’re not in trade or retail you may not have heard of them, but they have offices throughout the country, they inspect businesses and they make sure that we get what we pay for.

The main role of the LMS is to test and approve measuring instruments. Chances are that the petrol pump you used to fill you car or the scales that weighed your bananas was recently checked by an inspector from the LMS.

The LMS help us to make smart choices and carry on with our day-to-day lives without having to worry that we’re being ripped off all the time. This is a very good thing because nearly everything we buy needs to be measured. It doesn’t matter how much we’re charged as long as we know what we’re getting for that price. That way we can compare goods on a like for like basis, and discriminate on price.

Of course, the LMS is not the only government department that does this kind of work and there are some products out there that are not subject to their kind of rigorous scrutiny. Mobile phone plans are pretty much incomprehensible and financial products, although tightly regulated, can be very difficult to choose between - which is why comparison services like bonkers.ie and the government’s callcosts.ie help us make informed choices on products that would otherwise be very difficult.

Broadband is the granddaddy of complicated products though and the way it’s sold is both peculiar and unique. There is no other product that I can think of that is sold with the words “up to” before they tell you what you *might* get.

Broadband is both carefully measured and not measured very well at all. With most plans you get a certain amount of usage for a certain price every month. Suppliers have no problem measuring this and if you go over your allowance, you pay extra.

With speed it’s a different story. In a recent survey, Irish consumers overwhelmingly stated that speed was the most important factor when choosing a broadband provider, but speeds are never guaranteed. Almost all providers have plans that charge more for higher speed connections, but speed is still subject to line quality, distance and baffling things like contention ratios. With wireless and mobile broadband there are also factors like-line-of-sight and proximity that seriously affect connections and download speeds.

It’s hard to imagine going into a pub, asking for a pint, receiving a glass that’s half full for your fiver and then being told that the pub doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get a full pint. If you complain, the barman explains that they can only offer “up to” a pint, and how much you get depends on how far you are sitting away from the bar and how many people are in the pub!

But that’s just it with broadband, you may be paying for a 7Mb connection but only getting 4Mb. Now 4Mb down is very fast and will do the job just fine, but I’m pretty sure I’m not going to get a 40% refund because I’m not receiving the stated 7Mb download speed.

Broadband carriers will say that there are many factors that affect speed and they are right, but I think they are selling it the wrong way around. Speed is the most important factor for most of us so suppliers should have a stated or guaranteed minimum rather than saying that you could get “up to” 5Mb or 7Mb and then frequently delivering far less.

Most terms and conditions explain away the “up to” caveat by saying that the connection is shared by other people (contention ratio) along with the quality of your line/cable etc. This can be true, but then shouldn’t there be a requirement to test the service available before customers sign on for their (usually one year) contract and tell them what they can expect their minimum connection speed to be?

Having tested both my home ISP and my work connection today, I found that both performed very well. Upload speeds for both were right on the money and download speeds were shy of the mark but still very decent. We seem to be able to deliver good quality broadband in urban areas but I have yet to see a connection from any supplier that matches the speeds they tell us we could get.

Could the communications regulator Comreg also act as an LMS for the broadband industry? We could use a weights and measures department for the information age that could help simplify the way we’re sold and billed for broadband.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Sonru featured on RTE Radio One Drivetime with Mary Wilson and John O'Connor

A couple of weeks ago we wrote a blog post about how a story printed in our local paper was spotted by a company based in the USA. We then issued a press release to say how happy we were that our local Echo was so instrumental in Sonru signing our first US client. Well it seems there's no end to this good news story as most recently it was picked up by RTE Radio One. Yes indeed our little tale of local to international made John O'Connor's Regional Newspaper Round-Up on RTE Radio One's Drivetime show. You can listen to the show here but skip to 22.15 on the clock until we can get the clip itself.

  • Dont disturb me scrum at work

The scrum process provides for planning at different phases of a project to enable the delivery team and product owner, facilitated by the scrummaster to define product features with user stories and related definition(s) of 'done' for each sprint. With this in hand, the delivery team can achieve momentum to deliver working software with no interference.
There is no one solution to rolling out scrum in an organisation. This is understandable as each organisation has its own unique characteristics and challenges. As scrum seeks to complete a project over a series of sprints; organisations can borrow these principles to implement scrum over a series of iterations.
    Win-win all round.

  • People of Ireland it's time to start spending

Last week Dermot Ahern said that we Irish citizens should get out there and get spending and stop being such a bunch of scrooges squirreling away our cash in pesky savings accounts...

Well, not exactly, but he did say we should stop saving and start spending, and Dermot Ahern certainly hasn’t been the first Irish politician to say it. Every now and then, they cast their hairy eyeballs over the vast amount of cash we’ve stashed away and I’m sure they sigh to themselves and think that if they could just somehow encourage a no-holds-barred spending frenzy then all our problems would be solved. If it could be done with real cash and not that borrowed stuff, then all the better!

Although his comments were taken pretty badly, he is right. There’s a staggering amount of money sitting in our savings accounts and it’s been steadily climbing despite, or perhaps because of, the recession. We only tuck into our savings twice a year, once at Christmas and then during the summer. The rest of the time we just keep adding to the pile.

The last time the Central Bank counted it all up, there was €64.5 billion in our savings accounts and that doesn’t include our pensions, shares, investment vehicles and other ways we put away our money. That’s just cash, and it works out at €43,851 per Irish household. Imagine if we all went out tomorrow with that in a bag and started spending? What fun we’d have.

But we won’t... not yet anyway. I think that Irish people are worried about their jobs, don’t trust the government to get us out of this mess, and certainly don’t trust the banks. When jobs are more secure, and there isn’t constant talk about new taxes like water rates and property taxes and bringing low income earners into the tax net, then maybe, just maybe people will think about spending some of that cash. For now, people are keeping their heads down, saving away and preparing for the worst.

There has been a very interesting change in our savings habits though. It’s not just that we’re saving, but we’re doing something that seems to be a mirror of our turbulent economic times. Over the last year, we have been steadily taking money out of term accounts and putting it into notice accounts.

Term accounts are the ones where you agree to put your money away for a set period of time and in return you get a (usually quite good) fixed interest rate. Some accounts run for terms of as much as 10 years. Banks love them and they are generally popular with the public when times are good. However, between May ’09 and May ’10, the amount of money in term accounts has gone from €15.1 billion to €10.2 billion – a drop of €4.9 billion.

Conversely, the amount of money in notice accounts has increased from €12.3 billion to €17.2 billion over the same period of time. An increase of… you guessed it, €4.9 billion. In fact, the amount of money in notice accounts increased every month without dipping at all for that entire year.

Although I don’t like to try and pull conclusions out of data like this, it certainly looks like more than a coincidence. I feel that Irish people are simply not comfortable locking their money away for long periods of time anymore. Instead they are opting for accounts that still give decent rates of interest but that allow access after a bit of notice. 30 days or so is pretty standard and if trouble suddenly arrives on our doorsteps, we can hang on for 30 days for our money, but a couple of years is just too long.

bonkers.ie has some of it’s own data to add to this. We studied the habits of just over 3,500 savers that used our site to look for savings accounts and found that nearly 70% of those still looking for term accounts wanted a term of 1 year or less. Practically nobody was interested in terms of 5 years or more despite high interest accounts from bullet-proof institutions like RaboDirect and An Post.

The fact that we have been consistently increasing the amount of money we have in Irish banks shows that we must trust the government deposit guarantee. But not that much. We’re still saving, but we’re keeping it where we can get our hands on it fast just in case.

As regular readers know we are actively involved in domain name and internet industry self-regulation and policy development. It has always been my personal belief that if you have the ability to make your voice heard then you should take advantage of any and all opportunities to do so.

    Why?

Because the world is not perfect and neither is our industry.

If we don't let the rest of the industry know that we aren't overly happy with a particular policy then the chances of it ever changing are slim to none.

So how can you make a difference? Do you need to be a registrar to make your voice heard?

The short answer is anyone who wants to can make a difference simply by "turning up".

If you want to "dip your toes" then why not take a few minutes to submit a comment on one of the open comment periods listed on the ICANN site? Just head over there, read some of the background documents and add a comment via email.

There are a couple that might be of interest to the "normal" public:

Post-Expiration Domain Name Recovery - basically what happens to domains when they expire

Vertical Integration - can registrars own registries and vice-versa? Probably not that exciting a topic unless you're involved in the industry, but quite important if you're an advocate of free trade.

Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy (part B) - part of a series of policy groups about domain transfers (disclosure: I am the Working Group chair)

RAA Amendments - possible changes to the contract between ICANN and registrars (ie. companies like Blacknight)

If any of them aren't clear ICANN's policy staff can usually help clarify the topic under discussion

In my consultancy work with different organisations, I get asked what makes for an effective ICT strategy. Also on a related basis, is there a difference between and IS strategy and an IT strategy ? In this blog, I give my 2c on these two related topics. The ICT strategy must support both the organisation's business strategy and also show how ICT can be used to provide opportunities for new ways of doing business. An effective ICT strategy is a combination of an IS strategy and IT strategy

  • It's time to get our hands on some of the banks' money

bonkers.ie has been lucky enough to feature a few times in the press and on the radio this week. We worked out that Irish savers are missing out on over €1bln (yes, that’s really one billion euros) in interest that they could be earning by leaving their money in low interest accounts. We sent this info to the press, and some journalists and radio stations thought it was interesting enough to go with.

In a nutshell, what we were saying is that interest rates in Ireland are much higher than they should be, interest rates this good won’t last long and Irish people should take advantage of them while they can.

Why? Well, because Irish banks are on a deadline. The new regulator says they have to increase the amount of actual cash in their coffers before the end of the year to protect them against failing in the future. For most banks, this means doubling the amount of cash and reserves they hold on to.

Irish banks have to find this cash from somewhere and we, the humble citizens of Ireland, are their targets. But to get us to change bank accounts or move our money out of the post office, they have to give us something worth moving for, and that’s high returns on our savings. Rates are so high in some cases that you can earn more on your savings than you’re paying on your mortgage - especially if you’re one of those lucky tracker people.

The thing is that people with tracker mortgages aren’t really that lucky; they just saw an opportunity and jumped on it. Now they are reaping the rewards with super-low mortgage payments. In some cases, homeowners with trackers are paying as little as 1.6%. It’s so low because the ECB rate is just 1% and tracker mortgages follow the ECB – then the banks tack on a bit extra for themselves.

There’s a similar opportunity right now with savings rates and we should be taking advantage of them. As soon as the banks reach their cash goal, interest rates will most likely fall because they’ll have no incentive to offer the great rates anymore, and with the ECB rate at just 1%, savings rates in Ireland are artificially high.

Ok, talking about savings isn’t very exciting - but cash is. Most people like money, and here’s how to get more of it. Let’s say you have five grand in a deposit account – the one your bank suggested you open. It’s probably a demand account so you can get at your cash whenever you want to, but most demand accounts only pay 0.01% interest...

0.01% is so low that it might as well just be zero. With five grand in a demand account at 0.01% you’ll earn just 50c interest in a year… and here’s the worst thing; Irish people have €37bln in accounts like that.

By taking our money out of these terrible accounts, we can earn 3.3% interest and still get at our money whenever we need to. If we’re prepared to lock our cash away for a year, we could earn 3.5% and beat that end of year drop in interest rates. That’s 350 times as much interest! And we can earn even more if we’re prepared to save for longer. For our five grand, that means that instead of earning 50c, we can earn €175 a year. Not bad the half an hour it takes to change accounts.

Last time I made €175 in half an hour I was at a blackjack table in Vegas, but that’s a story for another blog.

If you’re thinking of finding a better home for your money, our graphic designer put together a “best-buy” table of rates below. It’s for that five grand we were talking about. To compare savings accounts for different amounts, just use the bonkers.ie savings tool.

  • Sick of .com? Meet .co!

    Meet .co

We're delighted to announce that we're now offering the .co domain extension for registration. But what is it you may be asking yourself?

.co is a strange beast, as it's being hailed as the "next big thing" and I guess your question should be, is it going to be ?

Well the .co registry are investing heavily in it and doing a lot of marketing to make it so, but is it working?

Based on what we've seen so far it looks like it could well be..

The first 15 minutes saw 90,000 .co domain names being picked up and it has being going strong ever since. After being available for regisration for only 3 days already there are over 280,000 domain names registered!

It's the country-code TLD for Colombia, but as I said its not being marketed as such its being marketed as an international domain extension to combat the heavily saturated .com marketplace

So should you register a .co?

An article on PCPro.co.uk seems to suggest that google will be allowing the .co extension to target the international domain market as opposed to the country specific and that should mean good things for international business sites.

With the vast majority of .com names being gone (90 million .com domains are currently registered give or take a million have you found a good one recently) or being up for sale for a lot of money have you thought what you could do with .co ?

So who are buying them, already the likes of twitter have picked up some premium domain names t.co for example ( will that be one of the smallest link shorteners on the market? possibly even rivaling our own link shortner Blacknig.ht :) )

If you like your stats you can see a rather interesting break down of who is currently purchasing them http://opportunity.co/pigsfly/.

You'll see registrations in the US and Europe are currently going strong.

If you're a company, corporation, community or even a contest does a .co make sense to you?

Blacknight is currently offering .co domains at just EUR29.99 one of the lowest prices on the market.

As one of the newest domain extentions you have a lot of choice for now so don't delay have you thought about protecting your brand?

Or registering something cool? Let us know

  • Time waits for no man - complete your video interview before the closing date

Make a good first impression and complete the interview by the closing date to demonstrate that you can complete tasks competently and are capable of working to certain deadlines.  Completing the video interview on time shows your interest in the role, for example a candidate that has to ask the interviewer to extend the closing date does not leave a good impression. So if you really want the job, pass this first test and you're already in with a better chance. Read on for some more tips and advice.

When you get your invite to complete your video interview please do the following:

    • Log in, check the interview title and the closing date. While you're there please check your equipment and settings by clicking on TEST YOUR SETTINGS, this will allow you test that your internet speed, audio and webcam are all in order. You can come back when you are ready to complete your interview but at least now you know you won’t meet any unknowns. If you have some hiccup with your equipment or settings you can contact support@sonru.com in good time and we can help you get it sorted. This will avoid last minute panic.

    • This is an interview so schedule a time in your diary or calendar to sit down and complete it, add a reminder.

    • Like all interview preparation, you might consider doing some extra research on the company and the role before you complete the interview.

    • Bear in mind that your competitors for the role will complete their interview in a timely fashion before the closing date. So you need to do so too.

The team at Sonru want every interviewee to have a great experience and complete a good video interview on time. If you've 4 days to complete a video interview and you log in for the first time one hour before the deadline and encounter problems, you're not setting yourself up for a smooth professional presentation. We are available most of the time to answer questions and help out but by avoiding last minute high drama can be the difference between you making that good impression and us not eating cold pizza! We hope these tips help, if you have any further queries please contact us. Good luck with your interview, now go log in a few days before the deadline. Thanks.

We wrote a blog post a couple of weeks ago about how local papers are not to be dismissed as we'd received a lead from a company based in Arlington, Virginia USA. We're now delighted to say that this company Irish Business Solutions is our very first client in the USA and they heard about us through an article in the Enniscorthy Echo.

Anyway so we got in touch with the Echo and they got a real kick out of hearing how they'd helped us break into the US market so they ran a follow-up story today which we've attached. So thank you Sean and co in the Echo office and keep up the good work. Here's a scan of the article below.

  • Local paper helps Sonru.com break into US market Press Release

Enniscorthy, 21 July 2010. Sonru.com announced today that a feature in the Enniscorthy Echo in May this year has directly led to the signing of a contract with their first US client.

Irish Business Solutions, a Stateside start-up recruitment company that hires Irish people to work in US companies will be using Sonru to vet Irish candidates and present potential recruits to relevant employers in the USA. Using Sonru’s online video interview tool is ideal as it will enable Irish based candidates to be presented to US companies without having to travel.

Paul Beaver, Irish Business Solutions’ Sales Manager for Ireland saw a write up about Sonru in his local Echo newspaper, passed it on to his superiors in the USA and the rest they say is history.

Joy Redmond, Marketing and Communications Manager of Sonru commented, “We all know that local papers are an integral part of community life in rural Ireland but now we can say with pride that our local papers do reach a global audience. Furthermore, it seems it’s not just our diaspora keeping in touch with home but businesses keeping an eye out for innovation and local enterprise. The local press have been very good to Sonru over the years and we’re only too delighted to sing their praises today.”

Brendan Barry, General Manager of Irish Business Solutions added ‘Here’s another case in point of an  Irish-American business partnership. As a US company targeting Irish American organisations in the States, we’re delighted to be able to showcase the very best of Ireland’s innovation and technology culture to our clients here.’

  • Introducing Blacknig.ht

    blacknight_ht.jpg

Over the last couple of years URL shorteners have gone from being "handy", yet probably geeky, to being omnipresent.

Just about every website out there has some kind of URL shortening builtin with an increasing number of companies / sites opting to use their own branded one.

We finally got round to putting our own shortener live this weekend opting for blacknig.ht (the ccTLD for Haiti)

We will be using blacknig.ht to share links on Facebook and Twitter (and possibly elsewhere), so we can send people links without diluting our brand.

So, for example, http://blacknig.ht/domains points to http://www.blacknight.com/domains.html - shaving a few characters off the link.

For the more technically minded, we're currently using YOURLS to run the service

  • Banks quietly hike credit card rates

My credit card rates just went up and yours probably did too.

Last month, very quietly, with little press and certainly no fanfare, Irish banks cranked up their credit card rates. I knew about it because we watch these things, we get notifications from some of the banks and we do regular checks anyway. But after we'd changed the credit card rates on bonkers.ie, I realized that as a customer I hadn't been told by my own bank. I thought maybe I'd missed it, checked my unopened post at home and still nothing. No letter that said "due to market conditions... charging you more interest... new rate from next week... etc etc".

I never go into my branch so I saw nothing there and I didn't see anything in online banking. Although it was caught by a few journalists, I checked with some friends and none of them knew about it. Some called their banks to check and sure enough, their credit card rates had gone up. Amazing. For all the big Irish banks to hoof up interest rates at the same time without so many of their customers noticing was a remarkable act of stealth, and I was truly impressed.

Now when my mortgage goes up, which is seems to about every six months (no tracker for me unfortunately), I get a letter, and of course it ends up all over the press. I would have expected the same for my credit card so I did something I've never done before. I went online, dug out the (shudder) credit card Terms and Conditions and started reading.

I'll abbreviate what they say about hiking my rates and how they're supposed to let me know... The bank can tell me by post, or by an ad in a newspaper, or on my statement, or a display in the branch, or online. I got no hint as to which one they used though. And whether I see it doesn't matter either. If I use my credit card after the "notification" I'm deemed to have accepted the changes. Just like that.

In fairness, a variable interest rate is just that. It can go up whenever the bank feels like it and if you don't like it, you can (theoretically) take your balance and schlep it on to one of those 0% interest balance transfer deals. But that's just it... very few people in Ireland can do that anymore so the banks have you where they want you. We now know that more than 60% of people applying for new credit cards are getting turned down. When Halifax pulled out of Ireland, the press was full of stories about people that couldn't get new credit cards with the Irish banks despite their good credit. Or if they did get new cards, than banks didn't want to take on their Halifax balances and gave them a limit much lower than they'd had previously.

Of course the banks are hurting for cash and I'm sure they are constantly on the lookout for ways to bring in more. This is a cunning little maneuver for them because the average Irish person has a balance of about €900, as a country we're in hock to the tune of about €2.1 billion on our credit cards, and most of us can't take our business elsewhere. So for every 1% increase in credit card interest, the banks are set to make €21 million between them. Not bad at all.

With so much of our cash at stake, I thought I should take a closer look at exactly what they've been up to. The three big cards from the three big banks are AIB's CLICK, Bank of Ireland's Clear and Permanent TSB's ICE. All of them put up interest rates last month. The BOI Clear purchase interest rate went up by 3.8% to 13.3% and the cash advance rate went up to 26% - a staggering 6.1%. PTSB put up the ICE purchase rate by 3.8% to 17.3% and increased the cash advance rate by just over 2%. And finally AIB increased their CLICK standard purchase interest rate by 4.1% to 13.6%. By anyone's measure, these are pretty hefty increases and with a quick back of envelope calculation I'd estimate that the banks are set to make over €100 million by doing this.

There's more to this though. Credit cards are set up in such a way that you always pay off the cheapest debt first. If you use your credit card to take €100 from an ATM and then use it for a €100 restaurant meal, you pay back the meal first because the bank wants to earn the big bucks off the cash advance. For example, with Bank of Ireland, you're paying almost double the interest for cash advances. They want to make that 26% interest for as long as possible even though it doesn't cost them any more to lend it to you.

At a time when people are finding it much harder to pay the bills, and the banks know their customers can't take their credit card balances elsewhere, I have to admit to just a smidgen of cynicism. One of the banks uses the tagline "Squeeze the most out of your credit card"... perhaps they should add the word "customers" to the end of that.

  • New Website for West Cork Accommodation Provider: The Cottage Bar

Like the name says, The Cottage Bar & Restaurant is a bar and restaurant in Glengarriff, West Cork, which also offers bed & breakfast and self catering accommodation.

We stopped at The Cottage Bar for lunch on one of our first trips out to beautiful Glengarriff. I remember the friendly, homey atmosphere; so I was delighted when the Somers Family contacted me to do a website for them. They wanted to start out with a simple site that they could easily update themselves. The site is now live at cottagebar.ie and shows off all that the establishment has to offer from home style cooking and comfortable accommodation to a convenient location in one of West Cork's most scenic locations.

Many businesses in the tourism industry are having a really hard time now and those that relied heavily on passing trade and word of mouth referrals are finding that they need to step up their marketing efforts, especially online. Those that don't yet have a site are now getting one and those with basic sites are getting content management systems so they can update the sites themselves to change rates and add special offers as often as needed.

As the tourism & accommodation industries are so competitive on the internet it's important that these businesses make sure that their web developer is experienced in search engine optimisation or works with an SEO, like me, who specialises in tourism. A small website will have a hard time competing on a national basis for competitive search phrases as there are so many large directory sites that are strongly optimised; but a small site can compete for more local searches, especially if all SEO techniques are utilised; especially on-page optimisation with good relevant content and high quality incoming links. These days a good social media marketing campaign is a great way to get more exposure for your establishment.

Contact me if you would like to know more about online marketing for tourism related websites.

  • Top 30 UK Hotels on Twitter #Top30UKHotels

This week, our Top UK Hotels on Twitter has 1 new entry and 7 hotels have moved up the table!

Has your hotel made the list?
  • STOP. Put the money down and step back from the designer. 1

When designing your website for the first time or working on an overall redesign make a list of your most important goals. Then make a list of the most important content that supports these goals. The rest of the design flows from these two lists. The order of priority and the visual presentation of information on your site should always follow these three simple but crucial steps.

    1. Clearly state what you do and the benefits to the user

    2. Follow that with an impressive client list and client testimonials

    3. Have a clear call to action to contact with you now

If a user is not ready to engage with you now, find a way to capture their details to continue the conversation and for future marketing opportunities by:

    1. Include an email subscribe

    2. Give a great reason why the user should subscribe

    3. Give something away, a chapter of a book, eBook, or an article to encourage sign ups and build trust.

    4. Remove the captcha on the sign up form. The few spam sign ups are worth the hassle compared to the leads you will lose.

Anything not on the above list should be removed or reduced in importance. Tighten up all spacing. Make sure the overall design is clean and clear, make it scanable and easy to find key information quickly.

The essence of a great redesign is “no time wasters please”. You don't want to waste your time and money creating a site that will confuse and annoy your users. Secondly, you do not want to waste these users time. It is bad form. Nobody has time to thrawl through badly designed sites that do not give us the information we need.

Follow these few simple steps and your redesign will convert more and lead you and your user on a mutually beneficial journey.

    Mary

Accessing the Web on mobiles is big. Very big. New research from Pew Internet found that 43 percent of Americans between the ages of 30-49 do it. And 65 percent of Americans under the age of 29 do it.

In fact, there are more mobile phones in the world than PCs and TVs combined.

With numbers like that, it's obvious: any company that offers Web services and doesn't have a mobile strategy in place is falling behind the curve -- and missing revenue opportunities.

  • WordPress 3 is now available via the App Vault

WordPress 3 Availble via the app vault
We're happy to announce that WordPress 3 is now available via the app vault on the Blacknight control panel. The app vault comes with all Shared Hosting Plans which are available from as little as EUR4.95 a month.

What does this mean for you? Good things

    WordPress 3 comes with:
    • a new default theme (called Twenty Ten)
    • menus
    • post types
    • contextual help on every screen
    • bulk update of plugins ( no more click one upgrade click one upgrade)
    • and a whole lot more including over 1000 bug fixes
But maybe this video can explain things a lot better that we can in a few words

So what does all this mean for you ?

If you don't have a blog? and want one with minimum hastle to install then log into your control panel. On the left you'll see the Application Vault. Click this and then click on blogging software and then click on WordPress and away you go configure it how you will.

If you already have a WordPress Application Vault install? this is another matter. As always when upgrading software we recommend you back it up. Application Vault installs are not covered by the Control Panel Backups solution. So we recommend you make a local backup of all your files (normally via FTP). Also make a backup of your database. You can then upgrade your Application Vault install via the Application Vault. For maximum compatibility its recommended you do the upgrade in this way and not via the automated WordPress Upgrade system

As always when upgrading WordPress you should check compatibility with your plugins. Plugins are generally created by third parties and may end up breaking things with your install. We recommend therefore during the upgrade process that you disable your plugins before you go to upgrade. As a webdesigner its one of the most common problems I come across with WordPress upgrades, everything stops working. Taking steps to disable the plugins pre upgrade should ensure a safe upgrade.

If you're coming from the land of the self install and your install is relatively up to date you can probably update it via the admin area of WordPress. Again we recommend backing up your files and database (which you can do via the control panel backups and in case anything goes wrong you can revert) checking compatability of plugins and disabling them before upgrading and then re-enabling your plugings.

If you want to do a fresh self Install you can find WordPress's latest version over at http://wordpress.org/download/

A final word: Most of the current or older themes won't be able to take advantage of some of the newer features initially however you should be able to see the features via the new twenty ten default theme.

Enjoy WordPress 3 Safely always backup your files and database :)

Not interested in our easy to install WordPress solution ? We've a whole pile of other easy to install applications available via the app vault

  • Who wants a free iPad?

    Is free really free?

During this past week, an Irish national newspaper announced it's new competition, offering entrants the chance to win a shiny new iPad from Apple. A fine prize for a competition you might think - and so do I.

The thing is, their competition requires an SMS-based entry (costing €2) and also requires the entrant to give the promoter lots of personal information (name, address, telephone number, etc).

I'm all in favour of running competitions to promote a product, gain insights to your audience or simply as a branding exercise. I don't think it's fair to extract personal information from someone, charge them for it, and then offer a one-in-thousands chance of winning a prize as an incentive. Who wins there? The promoter does. At €500 or so retail cost per iPad, it will only take 250 entrants to get to notional 'breakeven' on the outlay on the cost of the iPad, with a further chunk of notional revenue from the personal information they've amassed. The entrants certainly don't win.

As a card-carrying Apple fanboy, I buy everything they produce. Show me an AppleTV, iPhone, iPod, MacBook Pro or Mac Mini and I'm getting one.

So when it came to figuring out what prize we were going to give away for our first competition, there was a no better prize in my mind than an iPad. I agree with the national newspaper that it should act as incentive to get entrants excited enough to enter. When it came down to the question to ask to gain entry into the competition, asking a bunch of personal questions wasn't something I was in favour of - I wanted to ask as few as possible; but is it possible to ask entrants absolutely nothing?

Turns out that there is - and our competition has done just that. Using Facebook as the platform, someone can "Like" bonkers.ie and we can take that "Like" as the competition entry. We can run a simple sweepstake competition where the prize is an iPad and the winner is selected from the  "Likes". It's a really simple competition, achieves our goal to grow our audience and doesn't ask for much back in return. We're running the competition from now until the end of the month, entry is free, there are no intrusive questions, and very few conditions.

If you haven't already, you can enter the bonkers.ie free iPad competition

We'll pick and announce the winner on the 6th of August.

    Good luck!

  • Landing Page Optimization: Sell more by spending less. Part 2

Here is part two of my landing page optimisation post. If you missed it, part one is here. I am happy to receive your comments and suggestions and thanks for your feedback so far.

To recap: A landing page is the webpage you direct traffic to from a specific email, ad or piece of marketing. Its goal is to convert that traffic into sales or sign ups.

    Be Personal

When designing your landing pages the golden rule is to be personal. People like to buy from people, not computers, or websites. It's inbuilt in all of us to relate better to other people. The more you personalise your message and offer, the more you increase the connection with your visitor. Why, because it increases their comfort and trust when buying from you. A great example is to add your phone number to your site, as Brandon Eley points out. Once a visitor realises there is a person on the other end of the phone to help, IF needed, conversions increase. The knowledge that someone is there to help is enough to reasure the user.

Likewise, if there is any way you can make your message more personal and targeted for your page visitor the better. At the most basic, you need to know where in the world they are coming from and what site or advert they are visiting from. Are they an existing customer? Do you know their name? Can you tweak your message to include these details?

Link the landing page to the advert

    eircom_adwords

Here is an example of an ad for Eircom Broadband on Google. Note the wording and information contained. Yet when you click through to the landing page, pictured underneath, where is the mention of the “Value Business Bundles”?

    eircom_landingpage

    Repeat the Promise

You need to repeat the wording of the original ad and give a clear call to action. Repeat the wording and the graphics. It should be obvious to the visitor that they have come to the right page, with the offer they were expecting. The key point here is, you made a promise in the initial advert so you must fulfill that promise on the landing page.

    Scantastic

Make sure your pages are scanable. Here is the text from the first third of an Amazon product page for Seth Godin's book Purple Cow.

    Purple cow amazon Landing Page

This amount of information should be overwhelming but Amazon didn't become the leading online retailer by confusing and overwhelming shoppers. Here is the designed Amazon landing page for Purple Cow. What a difference.

    amazon_purple_cow_design

You can see now how design and formatting of the content makes information much clearer and easier to find. This example highlights one of the misunderstandings of landing page optimisation. Your pages do not have to be short to be effective. It doesn't even have to be that simple. Your landing page needs to be long enough, detailed enough and clear enough to make the sale. It can be 1 page or 5 pages. No one size fits all, so you will have to test what works for you.

An interesting side note regarding the addition of review on Amazon. You have probably heard how reviews increase sales. But recent data from Amazon has shown that products with both positive and negative reviews sell better then ones with positive reviews alone.

The reason attributed to this is twofold. First, we are a suspicious bunch and we don't trust something that everyone gushes about. The second reason is that negative reviews are not necessarily bad. A bad review from a large corporate CEO might tell a small business CEO that this is the book to buy.

    highrise wording1

    Wording

Simple word changes can have a huge impact. 37 Signals wrote about some of the wording variations they tried on their Highrise CRM sign up page. Here are three types used with the percentage increase in conversions for each one.

Their original wording had the worst conversion rate "30-day Free Trial on All Accounts." Variation no. 2 – "Sign-up takes less then 60 seconds. Pick a plan to get started!" gave a 30% better conversion rate. When you are attracting the level of traffic that 37Signal products do, 30% means a significant jump in revenue.

How to increase conversion with four amazing words.

    highrise_signup_button

Jason Fried said that they tested various phrases on the Highrise homepage for the call-to-action button. They had originally used various permutations of "Free Trial" and "Sign-up for Free Trial". Then they tested the phrase "See Plans and Pricing" this resulted in a 200% increase in sign-ups. That's right. 200%.

Fried believes it's because people are afraid if they click a link that says "Free Trial" then they'll automatically sign up for something and be trapped. However, "See Plans and Pricing" encouraged them to explore, without the fear of commitment.

    Euocottage Case Study

    original_homeowner_signup

This landing page from Eurocottage highlights a common failing for websites where they ask for too much information upfront. Ask for the least amount of information and at each step and clearly explain why you need this information in the first place. Explain to the user what the benefits are by imparting this information.

    Eurocottage_homeowner_signup

We redesigned this new landing page for Holiday Cottage search site Eurocottage.com. We simplified the process and gave users the information they needed to trust the sign up process. The new page is clearer and easier to use. It's friendly and welcoming and is much more inviting to users. We are testing the new landing page at the moment. It will be interesting to see the performance rates for the new page. We will keep you posted.

    Tools for testing

There are a few must have tools if you decide to try and measure and optimise your landing pages. Website Optimiser is a specific tool from Google for doing A/B and multivariate testing. If you use only one tool for testing this is it. Use Google analytics of course for basic numbers and tracking goal funnels.

5 Second test is an interesting site for checking what parts of your page people actually notice.

    Be a pirate!

    Pirate lpo

Be a pirate for your user! Sites like Amazon spend millions of Euro in usability and conversion tracking every year. Look at what the successful sites in your market are doing and copy them. No need to reinvent the wheel but try and make your own improvements. Landing page optimisation is not rocket science it is just a series of small simple tests. Devote an hour a week to it and track your progress.

    Why bother?

You can spend 6 months building a level of traffic converting at 1% and to double that turnover, you can spend another 6 months.

Or you can simply test and tweak the landing page to convert up to 2% or 3% in a fraction of the time.

  • New Natural Skin Care Range from SallyMiller.ie

I've just finished adding the newest addition to The Sally Miller Collection of Natural Cosmetics: Natural Skin Care Ranges which include cleansers, toners and face creams available in either Citrus Blossom & Ginger, Winter Jasmine & Chamomile and Wild Rose & Sandalwood; each suited to a particular skin type. There is also a Refining Skin Polish and Moisture Rich Night Cream.

I can't wait to try them because all of Sally's products that I use are amazing and I know that she's been working hard over the past months carefully sourcing ingredients and developing this line!

The e-commerce website for The Sally Miller Collection, www.sallymiller.ie was set up in 2007. In the early days, the Collection mainly included aromatherapy bath and body products -- and my favourites, soy candles and lip balms which I find heal chapped lips in a couple of hours. All made by hand in Sally's workshop in Rosscarbery using quality natural products.

Sally had been selling aromatherapy products for a few years before this in conjunction with her aromatherapy and massage practice. She built a big following in West Cork, selling in local shops, salons and markets. Getting online helped her to reach a wider audience - including an increase in the number of quality shops that stock her products across Ireland. Two years ago Sally added a line of Shea Butter products which are very popular and are still on the website, as are many of the old favourites.

Sally's range of Gift Sets are a big seller on the site. She also makes up special items for corporate gifts and as favours for weddings and other special occasions. A couple of years ago we sent Sally's Winter Spice Candles to our clients for Christmas. I say 'WE sent', but I should say 'SALLY sent' as we provided the labels and she did all the hard work. We got a number of great comments on that gift and it made it so easy for us!

Over the summer I will be working with Sally to set up some Social Media channels so that we can keep people informed on her products, how to use them and provide helpful information on aromatherapy, skin care, etc.

  • 60 Ways to Increase Your Influence Online: "The Influencer Project"

I think it was Krishna De that posted on Facebook about The Influencer Project and that's where I heard about it. "60 Speakers in 60 Minutes" talking about how to increase your influence online in the "shortest marketing conference ever" which broadcast last night at 6pmET (so 11pm here, not too bad for me). And it was FREE, so to me this was perfect. I've been listening in on a variety of webinars on about a weekly basis, but I've found that I've hit about all of those relevant to me and I've gotten to the point where I just get frustrated because I've got points I want to add and while some webinars do provide you with a way to ask questions, mostly they don't feature two way conversations. Now the Influencer Project was not going to be a way to provide input, at least not directly on the webinar, but it is an interesting new concept with 60 of mostly top social media professionals, so definitely worth a listen.

I did find I did have a way to make my points by posting on twitter using #influencer, though the points were not in depth as it was hard enough concentrating on the 60 minute spots (especially as I was also doing some other work at the time) and I did make some possible good connections with others following #influencer and got a few more followers on Twitter.

Luckily there will be an mp3 and PDF transcript to go back and review, but for now I thought I'd relate my points made during the original webcast (as with the Twitter feed, it's in reverse chronological order:
    1. What do you already have that other people don't -- get someone else's POV to look at it for you #influencer

Again, not just about products - entertain, inform, inspire #influencer

@timeontaskva Will need to go back to that minute! Find gifted upandcommers, become an advocate & create an advocate for life #influencer

Oh, a nice deep moment - listen for the silence #influencer
      - need to go back and see who that was, because it was a refreshing moment!

business model before pursuing fame for fame's sake #influencer<- downfall of many people

Share ideas liberally #influencer <- also a big theme tonight

      Listen! #influencer

I like the way Hank is thinking #influencer
      - that was @hankwasiak - will definitely start following him!

Get active in other people's communities - spread where your voice can be heard #influencer

repeat your tweets @guykawasaki #influencer <- still not sure on the frequency of doing this
      - Then @guykawasaki replied to that and we had a short conversation on the concept that ended with him saying "no guts no traffic"! So looks like guts is one of the things I need to work on!

become the master, the owner of one specific niche online then do webinars to teach others how to do this #influencer

A lot of people talking about going offline #influencer we probably do get too comfortable behind the keyboard

Make the people around you more successful than yourself #influencer

make something worth talking about (unique, inspiring, awesome) #influencer <- that's the hard part!

      Share good content *check* #influencer

Learn to talk more about other people #influencer

Try to be early in the news cycle #influencer <- excellent point

Defy convention where it's appropriate #influencer

Get good at filtering and aggregating content #influencer <- Amen!

Don't be afraid to have a point of you & share freely throughout the web (w/social bling) #influencer

Get co-billed with people with the same audience, difference services/products #influencer

If people can identify with your story they feel a part of what you are doing #influencer <- I get that!

Look for multiple circles, multiple spheres of influence #influencer

Test Drive 3 digital trends per month (or week?) #influencer
      - it was per month
So I made points on about 20 of the 60 items. There was some repetition between the points, as you'd expect. There were some points that I didn't think worth commenting on as it was the same old jargon that you hear over and over, as you'd also expect, but there was very little of that. Mostly it was plain talking about the basic concepts that most of us overlook on a day to day basis because we are too busy getting on with things - or for some, too caught up in just trying to make themselves look good as opposed to relating, sharing, interacting with others.

The one point that I think struck home with me the most -- and I now notice that I didn't comment on at all -- was about consistency, as it builds trust amongst your community. A couple of the speakers talked about having a consistent voice, but for me the challenge is in consistency of my activity in my own social media activities to ensure that I have a strong body of content that is interesting and timely. Because, unlike the majority of these speakers and other online marketing consultants that I consider to be top of the field, I also do web development and implementation of search engine optimization and social media techniques for clients, which is very time consuming, my own marketing takes a back seat (like finally moving this blog into my site with WordPress)! Guess it's time I listen to my own advice and get down to some good old fashioned time management techniques!

So sign up for the mp3 and PDF transcript at http://influencerproject.com and check this out for yourself and let me know your ideas on the 60 points.

If you want to connect with me, click here to see where I am across social media channels or basically follow me on twitter: http://twitter.com/ann_donnelly

Go ahead and kick my butt if you see me falling outside any of these good concepts (especially on consistency and time management)!

I have been working on branding a lot over the last few weeks for clients, for Spoiltchild and for Toddle. I am intrigued with how people present themselves both personally and professionally and how great companies embody great brands.

On the other hand, there is lots of hyperbole out there. Everything and everyone is described as " brilliant" "creative" and "innovative" to the point where I'm left feeling uneasy after reading the About sections in many Blogs and company profiles.

But more crucially, I don't know whether I should hire you or your company as your profile does not ring true to me. So more research and find someone else. Not a good result for your business I'd say.

The question is how do you describe yourself and your company in a truthful way that gives me, the perspective client, an understanding of how good you are and makes me hire you now?

    Here are my suggestions.

    1. Make sure to highlight recommendations from your previous clients. They know you and what you do and can give concrete examples why I should hire you now.

    2. Make sure your client testimonials are believable. Avoid words like "awesome" in the body of the recommendation. Check for the bull-o-meter before you hit publish.

    3. Focus on the benefits. Did you complete the project on time? Did you bring it in under budget? Did you manage the project well? Have you worked on similar projects previously? Did you win any awards recently?

    4. Be sincere. If your passion is helping people then state that. Your activities and achievements to date will back this statement up.

    5. There is no problem selling yourself but be a little humble about it. We can all spot half truths a mile off.

    6. Include a face. As humans we really relate to faces. Add a picture so we can see who you are and recognise you when we meet next time. It is a personal touch that builds trust.

    7. It's a conversation. Your profile speaks to your customers, colleagues and friends so why not make it a conversation starter.

    8. Have a read of Brooke Green's post "Block and Tackle" http://www.caskeyone.com/block-and-tackle/ on getting the basics right and building on good foundations.

  • Wedding-Invitations-Ireland.com gets new look with WordPress

My first friends in Ireland, Tony and Therese Cantwell started out selling creative, personalised baby announcement cards about 10 years ago and in 2002 branched into similarly creative and personalised wedding invitations with the site http://www.wedding-invitations-ireland.com. The site has gone through a couple different designs and layouts over the years and I have managed the site for them throughout. We've considered different Content Management solutions for the site, but now that I've done a number of sites in WordPress, using StudioPress premium themes (affiliate link), we decided that now was the time for a bigger change to the site - facilitating more control for Tony and Therese to manage the site themselves.

I worked with Tony through setting up the WordPress installation and some coaching (while 6 of our 7 kids played in the background) and assistance in updating the content and images, as well as SEO and social media aspects of the site. I provide this service in my blogging workshops and one-to-one training on a regular basis, but as I had been working with Tony on his sites over the past 10 years, I knew he was able to take on a lot more than a beginning user, like making changes to the CSS stylesheet.

It's great working with Tony and Therese because they are very dedicated to providing a quality product to their clients -- along with a very high standard of service. They are great at helping the brides and grooms select just the right style and develop the appropriate wording for any situation.

The site has done well on search engines for a number of related phrases and it's been a great selling tool to back-up their attendence at wedding fairs and traditional advertising they've done through a printed brochure and some print ads. The new development should even add to the current success of the site with the ability to more easily add news and informative articles through blog posts and social media integration.

Tony has now added on his newest range of wedding stationery and information on his services and can update just about any aspect of the site himself now -- and he's started on the redevelopment of the baby announcement site!

We've planned a big celebration -- mainly of the fact that Tony & Therese don't have to wait for me to make any changes for them anymore :-)

  • New Kid on the block, Hot News on the wires

Shane Barron joined the team yesterday as our Technical Services Engineer and we're very positive about his future in Sonru. First up he's a fruit eater and that's always a good sign, second he has a good sense of humour (essential), third he's a squash player (Ed will like that) and last but not least he is one hot developer. That probably explains why his appointment was such hot property on the wires yesterday.

So we put up an announcement on a couple of the press release sites and as always Barry from IrishDev was first off the tracks following up and looking for photos, so we took a few photos here in the office not taken by Mark our regular pro photographer. Next came a call from Sorcha in bizstartup.ie who rather boldly went with our Shindler's List style black and white pic of Shane eating a red apple as mastered by in-house uber woman/sales manager Maiken. And the rest they say is history, Silicon Republic, Non Stop Tech News, a good bit of tweetback too.

Before I left the building last night, I swung into the tech office to see if Shane still had a level head and I'm pleased to announce he's a grounded young man. I told him just to be extra vigilant walking around town as the attention can be quite jarring ;)

Thanks folks for joining us in welcoming Shane to the team. Much appreciated as always.

  • New Website for Wireless Broadband & VoIP Provider in SW Ireland

I've recently completed http://www.corkkerrybroadband.com for VOIP and Internet Services LTD, a new wireless broadband provider who are currently offering services in West Cork, Kerry, North Cork & Tipperary and will be expanding to other areas.

The website provides information about the company and the services it provides, which includes VoIP Telephone Services that allow you to make calls through the internet without a landline. This should be a very popular add-on to most broadband packages as many people, including myself, are doing away with the home landline (and the monthly rental charge) and turning to VoIP.

It's great to see another broadband internet provider servicing this area, which is mainly made up of rural communities that have little or no broadband options at present. Hopefully some competition will bring better services and pricing. In fact the tagline on the site is "Connecting people in rural areas with the World".

The official launch of the business takes place this evening at Richy's Bistro in Clonakilty at 7.30pm, in the presence of the Mayor Cork County Cork, Councillor Jim Daly.

From Tuesday 6th July to Sunday 11th July, from 4pm to 9pm, VoIP and Internet Services will have a mobile demonstration unit at Harte's Eurospar, The Bypass, Clonakilty, Co. Cork for anyone interested in learning more about the service.

It is easy to provide an alternative node.tpl.php template for your different content types by naming your new node template file along the lines of node-[nodeType].tpl.php, placing it in your theme folder and then clearing you cache. Drupal automatically handles all of this for you.

  • Why Your Hotel Website Needs to be 'Liked'?

Since the release of Facebook's 'Open Graph', Facebook's sticky little tentacles have been latching on to websites across the entire web. To some, the new universal 'Like' button was a trivial addition, adding little benefit over the already fairly widely used 'Fan Box' (which later became the 'Like Box'). There are, however, distinct advantages to having this new little button.

Facebook have recently confirmed that if you include the 'Like' button on your site, your site (and also a link back to your site) will be findable in Facebook search without the need to add a separate Facebook page.

The main links you'll find for Hotels in Facebook Search at the moment are links to TripAdvisor or Yelp (which have both greeted this new function with open arms). So, to fight for direct bookings through your hotel's own website, adding the Facebook 'Like' button should definitely be up there on your 'to do' list.

  • Twelve easy ways to save loads of money

    "Expenditures rise to meet income"

Or no matter how much you make you'll find a way to spend it. So said the English author Cyril Northcote Parkinson in his famous second law. His first - "work expands to fill the time available for its completion" - is a canny observation on how a five minute job can take an hour if you let it.

Parkinson was right on the money though. I know that with every increase in my income, I've found a way to spend most of it. But over the last year, my income has shrunk along with almost everyone else in Ireland. Thanks to taxes and levies it's time for me to really look at ways to cut my expenses.

There's a another part to Parkinson's second law and that is that "the reverse is not true" meaning your expenses don't automatically shrink to match your dwindling income. Now I know that it's hard to cut back, but I don't think it's impossible. I think we're just paying too much for the stuff we need and the stuff we do.

Of course, the Internet is full of money-saving tips and advice, but a lot of it just too much hassle. I don't expect cutting a couple hundred euro a month from my spending to be easy, but if it's torture I won't do it. I've looked at lots of sites, spoken to friends and colleagues and come up with a few things I thought were good ideas. Some I've tried, some I haven't and some I won't do at all, but I was surprised at how much can be saved by doing just a few.

Here's some good ones for around the house:

Cable and Satellite TV. Most of us are paying a monthly subscription for TV, but most of the channels we watch are available for free. The free-to-air satellite boxes that turn up in Lidl and Aldi every now and again cost about €120 - you can even get a version with a recorder for a few euro more. The dish needs to be put up which apparently you can do yourself if you're handy, and that's it. No more monthly TV bill. Thanks to JC for this one, will you come and install mine? :-)

I reckon on savings of about €30 a month here.

Home phone 1. Do you still have a home phone? When did you last use it? Just the line rental is probably costing €30 a month. This is an easy save. Just cancel it. I cancelled mine when I moved home and didn't get a new one - I don't even notice that it's gone.

Savings at least €30 a month.

Home phone 2. If you actually need a home phone and have broadband in the house, consider using Voice over IP. You can get a VOIP box which plugs into your broadband modem and your plain ole telephone plugs into that. It works exactly the same as the real thing and for about a fiver a month, you get a real phone number. Then just pay for calls (which are very cheap). There's a bunch of Irish providers that'll set this up for you. The box will cost about €40 which is less than two months line rental. Thanks to the guys at Worldlink.ie for this one.

Savings at least €25 a month.

Bundled communications. The simple answer here is don't do it. It might sound like a great idea to get a home phone with unlimited calls to the UK included with your digital TV pack for an extra 15 a month, but unless you call the UK every day and stay on for an hour at a time it's not worth it. Same goes for the so called TV deals. They are all designed to pull an extra fiver out of you here and another tenner out of you there.

Savings on bundled calls and TV recorder subscriptions €20 a month.

Electricity 1. It's easy and fun (no kidding) to reduce your usage. Get an electricity monitor like an "Owl" which shows you in real time how much juice your house is using. Turn stuff off and on again, find out how much the gadgets and appliances are using and then, as they say, knowledge is power. The Owl guys reckon you can save about 15% off your energy bill just through awareness of how much electricity stuff uses. I love this one and I think they're right, although I've become insufferable as I walk around the house with the monitor in my hand!

    Savings about €10 a month.

Electricity 2. Switch. If you haven't already, you can save as much 14%. If you switched a year ago you're coming off your introductory offer and your discount has fallen to as little as 5% off ESB rates, so it's time to switch again. bonkers.ie will show you exactly how much you can save, which provider is cheapest for you and help complete the switch for you.

Savings about €10 a month for an average house.

Gas. Switch that too. Savings of as much as 11% off Bord Gais rates are available. bonkers.ie is building a gas comparison service, but if you want to switch right now, contact Flogas or Airtricity directly. It took a week for mine to go through.

Savings of about €6 a month for an average house.

    ***

Just by sorting the utilities, I could save about €100 a month. Not bad, and they are easy saves; make a change once and the savings keep on coming. Just don't let new expenses rise to meet your newly-saved cash!

There's a few more suggestions below that I found interesting. They're not as easy because you've got to keep doing some of them, but the savings can make it very worthwhile.

    ***

Check your tyre pressure. Know how much harder it is to cycle a bike with soft tyres? Same with your car. If you're tyres are not properly inflated, your car has to work much harder to move you around. With petrol now costing around €1.35 per litre this is an easy way to save a few bob.

Depending on how neglected your tyres are, I'd guess savings of about €10 a month.

Forget the car altogether. It's summer, the weather is better, the traffic is lighter and it's easier to get around.  Take the bus into the city centre and when there, use a Dublin Bike or the city center bus to get around. If you sign up to the Dublin bike scheme you can take out bikes for free and the city centre bus service only costs 50c per journey. Save on petrol, parking and hassle.

Make three times as much! Next time you're making chili, curry, casserole or any big pot dish, make loads more than you usually would and freeze what you don't use. These meals are great replacements for take-away and delivery food. Just pull it out of the freezer, reheat, and you'll have dinner faster than the pizza guy can say 20 minutes.

    Savings €20 on take-away for 2.

Bike to work for the summer. It costs nothing to run, nothing to park and gets you into shape. Best of all, you'll know exactly how long it'll take to get from your house to your work every day.

Savings off the bus or train about €80 a month.

No money fun. Instead of going to the pub, cinema or restaurant, try something cheap or free instead. With the long evenings it's a great time to go for a walk in the park, have friends around for a bottle of wine outside or go along to one of the council's free events (check their websites for details - they are surprisingly good). Thanks to Aoife for putting me on to the events.

Savings on skipping a night at the pub or restaurant... €20, €30, €40, more?

I'd say with a few easy adjustments, I could save a couple of hundred euro a month which I can put into my high interest rainy day fund. If you have any more easy or interesting ways to save a few bob, we'd love to hear them. Just leave a comment below!
