February 2012, Dublin: Irish website www.birthdaycufflinks.ie, offering a wide range of cufflinks made from Irish coins spanning 84 years, has just been launched to Irish gift shoppers. Regardless of the occasion, if you would like to mark an important year in some special person’s life birthdaycufflinks.ie has the perfect gift for you!
The cufflinks feature authentic Irish coins which have been cleaned, polished, shined and mounted by hand in Dublin. The coin cufflinks with coins dating back to the first Irish Free State coinage in 1928 are presented in professional cufflink boxes.
W.B. Yeats headed a coinage committee, formed by the newly founded Free State in 1926, which that the designs would feature a series of animals reflecting Ireland's mainly agricultural economy such as the bull, hare, wolfhound and salmon. In doing so Ireland became the first modern state to design an entire set of coins.
The challenge was to create coinage that would be both attractive and embody the spirit of Ireland; Yeats specifically set-out to design coinage that would be ‘beautiful, intelligible and appropriate in meaning for the people of the country and foreigners’ – we think you’ll agree that he certainly achieved this and now the designs can continue to be treasured in the form of cufflinks for many years to come. The coins dating back to some of those early days of the Free State have even greater significance as they feature ‘Saor Stat’ which was removed when Ireland became a Republic.
www.birthdaycuffllinks.ie was introduced due to the demand for specific years experienced on its sister website www.worldcoincufflinks.com founded by Maura Reynolds who, after the introduction of the Euro, developed the idea of fashioning the old coins into stylish cufflinks. Last year they were commissioned by a costume designer to make specific cufflinks for a ABC TV show 'No Ordinary Family' The cufflinks were worn by the hero and villain characters of the series which had 8 million weekly viewers in the US.
Speaking at the launch of birthdaycufflinks.ie Maura explained ‘There is a strong affinity between people and coins which represent their heritage and culture. Worldcoincufflinks offers coin cufflinks from approximately 20 different currencies. However when the word spread that President Bill Clinton and actors Liam Nielson and Gabrielle Byrne had been presented with our Irish coin cufflinks from the year they were born the demand for specific years grew to such an extent that we decided to set-up a site where people can choose Irish coin cufflinks from particular years themselves.
On the website, every year has a section on what was happening at the time, including the music, bands, movies, and world events at that time.
If you simply want to reminisce or to pick-up a perfect nostalgic gift for that special person in your life visit www.birthdaycufflinks.ie.
