Dyslexic Support Centre Enhances Accessibility with BrowseAloud

The Dyslexic Support Centre has enabled an innovative new product on its website which allows people with literacy difficulties or mild visual impairments to read the website content.

BrowseAloud reads website content aloud and highlights each word as it is spoken. This combination is a great help for those with literacy difficulties, such as dyslexia who find reading text online difficult – it is reported that over 500,000 adults in Ireland have literacy difficulties.

BrowseAloud is free of charge to the website visitor, with the cost covered by The Dyslexic Support Centre. Visitors to website – www.dyslexicsupport.org – should click on the BrowseAloud icon on the home page and then follow the easy steps to install the software.

Once the software is downloaded then all websites on the internet that are BrowseAloud-friendly can be read aloud for free.

Director of The Dyslexic Support Centre, Marie Stubbings said: “It is important to help those who have difficulty reading online content; BrowseAloud was the perfect solution and is proving to be an invaluable tool, especially as users can personalise BrowseAloud to their own individual needs”.

“This new facility has made the website even more accessible for all our online visitors who will now be able to find out information regarding our Summer Schools, distance learning packages, educational assessments and information on tuition for students”.

“BrowseAloud makes the learning process easier for those who are being tutored. Dual colour highlighting aids comprehension and enables users to interact at their own pace with the customised speed and volume buttons”.

BrowseAloud already works with major clients across Ireland including Permanent TSB, The Department of Agriculture, The Taoiseach, Houses of Oireachtais and The Health Insurance Authority among others.
