Aware is a voluntary organisation founded 25 years ago. Our aim is to create a society where people with depression and their families are understood and supported, are free from stigma, and have access to a broad range of appropriate therapies to enable them to reach their full potential. Our services include:
- LoCall helpline: Staffed by volunteers, it provides a listening ear to those in immediate distress and is available 365 days per year.
- Support Groups: Over sixty support groups throughout Ireland, staffed by trained volunteers. These groups provide a safe place where attendees can be real and feel accepted. They establish an emotional connection through which pain can be expressed and transformed. They are encourage to turn towards, rather than away from their pain and it leave them with a much larger sense of what their lives are about and what the future might hold for them.
- Beat the Blues: Is an educational awareness programme aimed at senior level secondary school students. It encourages students to be more open about their emotional difficulties. It helps them to recognise depression either in themselves or their friends and how to support each other to seek help. With this programme we hope that future generations will view depression as an illness and not a character flaw.
Other services include Public Lectures, Information Leaflets and Research.
