About the Speakers

  • Ms. Martha Rotter (Developer & Platform Group)

    Microsoft Ireland

    Martha Rotter is a member of the Developer and Platform Group in Microsoft Ireland. She moved over from Microsoft in Seattle, Washington, where she spent six years developing test tools and frameworks for the Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) teams. Since joining Microsoft, Martha has been working with web and desktop client development technologies and continues to enjoy learning about the latest and greatest for developers.   • Mr. Matthew Ovington (Managing Director)

    Open Interface

    Matthew Ovington is a co-founder and Managing Director of Open Interface, a usability and accessibility consultancy based in Dublin. Before founding the company in 2001 Matthew was a Senior Usability Engineer at Nua, the web consultancy founded by Gerry McGovern. Matthew advises clients on Information Architecture, accessibility and usability - testing, evaluating and forming strategies for the development and maintenance of easy to use and engaging websites.

    Matthew has an M.Sc from Trinity College and is Chairman of the IIA User Experience Working Group.

  • Mr. Fiachra Ó Marcaigh (Director & Senior Consultant)

    AMAS

    AMAS Director and Senior Consultant Fiachra Ó Marcaigh is an experienced communications and IT professional. He has worked at senior level in national and online media for over 15 years.

    He joined AMAS in 2003 and became a Director in 2006.

    He has led a number of significant eBusiness and eGovernment projects including:

    - Strategy formulation and guiding client teams on implementation

    - Specifying complex content projects

    - Leading research, usability and accessibility projects.

    He is a former Assistant Editor with The Irish Times, where his responsibilities included specifying, buying and managing all technology used by journalists. He led the team that delivered technology and training and implemented new technical initiatives, including the contributing to the pioneering creation of Ireland.com.

    Fiachra Ó Marcaigh devised and delivered the very successful Irish Times Training course "Introduction to the Internet" to a wide range of business, public service and personal clients.

    From 2000 until 2002, he was Operations Editor of Digiserve, the new media publisher. He managed the interface between technical and editorial teams to create four major portals. He also acted as General Manager of EDO Software Services, the Digiserve subsidiary.

    Fiachra Ó Marcaigh is a frequent guest speaker at conferences and is a regular media commentator on IT, usability, accessibility and online communications.

  • Mr. Dónal Rice (Senior ICT Advisor)

    Centre for Excellence in Universal Design, NDA

    Dónal Rice in the Senior ICT Advisor for the NDA Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD) which was launched in October 2007.  The CEUD is dedicated to the principle of universal access, enabling people in Ireland to participate in a society that takes account of human difference and to interact with their environment to the best of their ability.  Dónal has responsibility for the NDA IT Accessibility Guidelines and formerly worked extensively with many public sector departments and agencies on the NDA's Excellence through Accessibility Awards.  

    Dónal holds a BA in Maths and English from University College Dublin, a post graduate diploma in IT from Dublin City University and is currently completing an MSc in Computing from Griffith College Dublin.

  • Mr. John Wood (Senior Analyst)

    iQ Content

    John is a Senior Analyst, with more than six years' experience in content production, requirements analysis, web usability and information architecture.

    John worked on a freelance basis with iQ Content from 2002, joining full-time in October 2004. Since then, he has worked on a wide variety of analysis and design projects for clients such as Vodafone, Tourism Ireland, and Comhairle. He has also designed and delivered training courses on usability evaluation, web form design and information architecture.

    John is a recognised expert in user centred design methods such as persona and scenario development, and has considerable experience in user testing and expert evaluation methods. This extends to information architecture design techniques such as card sorting, affinity diagrams and the development of controlled vocabularies.

    Before joining iQ Content, John worked at the National Council for the Blind of Ireland, conducting research on haptic user interfaces and assistive technologies. He was also instrumental in setting up the NCBI's Centre for Inclusive Technology (CFit). Previously, John spent six years at eLearning company SmartForce, where he established the technical publications group, managed business requirements analysis and led an initiative to introduce user centred design into the software development process.

    John has a First Class Honours degree in Modern and Contemporary History from the University of Ulster and is currently studying for a Masters in Psychology.

  • Ms Sorcha Moore (User Interface Designer & Information Architect)

    Pocket Kings

    Sorcha Moore is a User Interface Designer & Information Architect for Pocket Kings, a Technology and Marketing consulting service to the online poker industry and one of the fastest growing poker sites, Full Tilt Poker.
     
    She is a former member of the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group and the Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group.
  • Mr. Joshue O'Connor (Senior Accessibility Consultant)

    NCBI Centre for Inclusive Technology (CFIT)

    Joshue O Connor is Senior Accessibility Consultant with CFIT (Centre For Inclusive Technology).

    CFIT is an integrated unit of the NCBI (National Council For The Blind of Ireland) and is a not-for-profit organisation that provides expert advice and services to public and private sector organisations. These services include user testing, accessibility auditing and training.

    Josh is skilled in the design and development of accessible websites/applications and he has a deep understanding of the diversity of user requirements. When not running user tests, doing accessibility audits or advocating for accessibility and Web Standards he puts his spare cycles to writing and research. Josh has written several research papers on topics relating to accessibility and web development and his first book on creating accessible content with the open source CMS Joomla is now available.

    Joshue is also an active member of the W3C HTML 5 Working Group and the Protocols and Formats Working Group.

  • Ms. Fiona Murphy (Director & Co-Founder)

    Front End

    Fiona is a co-founder and a director of Frontend.com, Ireland's first Usability and User Centred Design consultancy. For over 10 years Frontend has integrated usability and accessibility methodologies into the design process; creating positive user and customer experiences. Frontend have established an impressive blue chip client list in Ireland, the UK and across Europe including Barclays Bank, Reuters, AIB, Rabobank, BBC, O2, Vodafone, Unilever, Diageo, Symantec, Bank of Ireland, Revenue and Hewlett Packard.

    Fiona has been working in the industry for over 16 years with qualifications in Design (BDes), Interactive Multimedia (MA IMM) and Strategic Marketing (dip SMM). She brings with her a wealth of experience in Usability, User Centred Design and Customer Experience.

  • Mr. Odhran Ginnity (Chief Operating Officer)

    Daft.ie

    Odhran Ginnity is COO at Daft Media, one of Ireland's largest online
    media groups.  He is responsible for the day to day running of the
    business and maintaining the groups rapid growth as a company.  Last
    year, 9 out of every 10 properties put up for sale in Ireland were
    listed on their flagship title, Daft.ie which currently drives over 1
    million unique visitors per month and over 85 million page
    impressions.  In March 2008, Daft Media acquired rival property
    website property.ie.

    Prior to Daft Media, Odhran was Managing Director with Jobs.ie, which,
    over a 3 year period was developed into Ireland's busiest recruitment
    website before being successfully sold to the Saongroup.com.  He was
    also responsible for running several international job sites in Europe
    and internationally.
