They provide a wide range of services which encompass postal, communication, retail and money transmission services.
An Post provide information to their customers via the website. They have recognised the importance of equal access to the web and have incorporated Browsealoud, an innovative software solution from Texthelp Systems, to read their website content aloud.
Browsealoud adds speech to websites, highlighting each word as it is spoken. This unique functionality improves reading comprehension for over 20% of the population with dyslexia, literacy difficulties and those with mild visual impairments who find reading text online difficult.
Joe Murray, Web Manager at An Post stated "As part of our commitment to literacy, we introduced Browsealoud to our website. Online visitors can now listen to the text being read aloud to them."
Web users can download Browsealoud quickly and easily by following hyperlinks on any Browsealoud-enabled website. The tool is free for online visitors to use, with the cost covered by An Post, and will speak web content aloud on any website which subscribes to the service.
Web visitors simply download the application once and then all websites on the Internet that are Browsealoud-friendly can be utilised in this way. Browsealoud has a text magnification feature to read and increase text size for those with visual impairments and whole pages of text can be read continuously.
Joe Murray continues "Browsealoud was chosen as it is easy to use and helps us to widen accessibility to those visitors with mild visual impairments, reading difficulties or those whose first language is not English."
Browsealoud already works with major clients across Ireland and the UK. These include Permanent TSB, Office of the Attorney General, Dublin City Council, Cavan County Council, Fingal County Council, Galway City Council, Office of the Houses of Oireachtas, ESB and many more.
